The Vanishing Village ( R.S. Thomas)

CONTEXT: In this poem, the poet depicts the gloomy picture of a deserted village because the people of this village are migrating towards the cities for their better future. However, the poet is optimist and hopes for the revival of village life once again.
سیاق وسباق: اس نظم میں شاعر ایک تباہ حال گاوں کی اداس کر دینے والی تصویر پیش کرتا ہے کیونکہ اس گاوں کے لوگ اپنے بہتر مستقبل کیلئے شہروں کی طرف ہجرت کر رہے ہیں۔ تاہم شاعر روشن خیال ہے اور ایک بار دوبارہ گاوں کی زندگی کی بحالی کی امید کرتا ہے۔
EXPLANATION: Plato believes: “Village is the basic unit of civilization.” The poet also believes in the same idea and shows optimism. In the given lines, he tells that he sees a village which is a deserted area now. The modern civilization has compelled the people to migrate towards the cities. That’s why, there is only one street in the village. It leads nowhere. However, it leads to an inn and a hill which is being engulfed by the heaps of grass which have appeared in the street because this street is not used by the people frequently. No activity is seen in this village. However, a black dog is seen cracking his fleas. But, he is just the sign of the past and the destroyed present of the village. He also observes a girl going from one door to the other. She outdoes the limits of day and night with her growth and development. But, at the same time the poet gives vent to his optimism. He like Plato believes that the village has to play a great role in the social evolution of human life. Thus the village and the type of life in village should not be allowed to disappear in order to keep alive the basic unit of civilization.
تشریح:افلاطون کا خیال ہے کہ ” ایک گاوں تہذیب کی بنیادی اکائی ہوتا ہے۔” شاعر بھی اسی خیال پر یقین کرتا ہے اور روشن خیالی ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ دی گئی لائنوں میں وہ کہتا ہے کہ وہ ایک گاوں دیکھتا ہے جو اب ایک تباہ حال علاقہ ہے۔ جدید تہذیب نے لوگوں کو شہروں کی طرف ہجرت کرنے پر مجبور کر دیا ہے۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ گاوں میں صرف ایک ہی گلی ہے۔ یہ کہیں نہیں جاتی۔ تاہم یہ ایک سرائے کی طرف جاتی ہے اور ایک پہاڑی کی طرف جسے گھاس کے ڈھیر نگل رہے ہیں جو کہ گلی میں نمودار ہو گئے ہیں کیونکہ لوگ اس گلی کو لگاتار استعمال نہیں کرتے۔ اس گاوں میں کوئی سرگرمی نظر نہیں آتی۔ تاہم ایک سیاہ رنگ کا کتا اپنے پسووں کو اڑاتے ہوئے دیکھا جا رہا ہے۔ لیکن وہ صرف ماضی کی اور گاوں کےموجودہ تباہ حالی کی علامت ہے۔ وہ ایک لڑکی کو بھی ایک دروازے سے دوسرے دروازے تک جاتے ہوئے دیکھتا ہے۔ وہ اپنی نشوونما سے دن اور رات کی حدوں پر سبقت لیجاتی ہے۔ لیکن ٹھیک اسی وقت شاعر اپنی روشن خیالی کا بھی اظہار کرتا ہے۔ وہ بھی افلاطون کی طرح اس بات پر یقین رکھتا ہے کہ ایک گاوں کو انسانی زندگی کے سماجی ارتقاء میں ایک بہت اہم کردار ادا کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ اسطرح تہذیب کی بنیادی اکائی کو زندہ رکھنے کیلئے گاوں اور گاوں کی طرز کی زندگی کو کبھی بھی ختم نہ ہونے دیا جائے۔
