THE IMPORTANCE OF SANTIAGO’S HAND GAME WITH THE NEGRO

Q. Discuss the importance of hand game in the life of the old man.

Answer: Santiago often thought of his past memories. Among his sweet memories, his hand game with the Negro was a source of consolation and confidence to him. It took place in a tavern at Casablanca. The Negro was considered the strongest man of the area. The contest continued for one day and one night. Santiago sat face to face with the Negro with their elbows on chalk line on a table. Each one was trying his hard to force the opponent’s hand down. But at last, at day light, when the bettors wanted to have the end of game in a draw, Santiago used all his power in lowering down Negro’s hand on the table. It was a nerve breaking struggle made by Santiago. Santiago was called “The Champion.”

This incident of Santiago’s youth gave him a new zeal and he felt a new vigour in his old body. This incident was a source of energy for the old man.  The remembrance of this past event lessened his sense of isolation as well as stimulated his failing spirits.                                                                                                                    (Words: 177)
