8. SYMBOLISM IN THE NOVEL OR

       SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NOVEL

Q. What sort of novel is “The old man and the sea”? OR Discuss different symbols used in the novel.

Answer: Symbolism is one of the important devices. The apparent meanings lie on the surface while the symbolic meanings are almost hidden from view. Hemingway has employed different symbols in the novel.

The old man is true representative of mankind. Nature has vanished many species of animals from the earth but man exists owing to his power of endurance.

The Marlin symbolizes human aim for which a man struggles in his life. Killing of the Marlin is a symbol of attaining aim with great difficulty.

The sea symbolizes life. Like life it is replete with joys and sorrows. The boy, Manolin symbolizes passion of Santiago’s lost youth. The old man says: “The boy keeps me alive.”

The lions indicate strength and immortality. The boat is a symbol of home. The sky is a symbol of uncertainty. The earth is a symbol of peace. Memories of Di Maggio and hand game are a source of energy for the old man.

In short, Hemingway’s symbolism suggests that failure or success is not important in life but struggle and courage is.                                              (Words: 177)
