Q.No.2: Read the following passage and answer the questions given at the end. (The answers must be in your own words.)
Speech is a great blessing but it can be a curse, for while it helps to make our ambitions and objects known to our collaterates, it can also, if we use it carelessly, make our attitude completely misunderstood.
The slip of the tongue, the use of an unusual word, or of an ambiguous word and so on, may create an enemy where we had hoped to win a friend. Again different vocabularies and the ordinary speech of an educated man strike an uneducated listener as showing pride, unwilling by we may use a word which bears a different meaning to out listener from what is done to men of our own class. Thus, speech is not a gift to use lightly without thought, but one which demands careful handling only a fool will express himself alike to all kinds and conditions of men.
Translation: ایک عظیم نعمت ہے لیکن یہ ایک برائی بھی بن سکتی ہے کیونکہ اس سے ہمارے عزائم اور ہمارے مقاصد کو جان جاتے ہیں۔ بولنا
اور ساتھ ہی اگر ہم اسے لاپروائی سے استعمال کرتے ہیں تو یہ ہمارے رویے کو غلط سمجھنے میں بھی برائی بن سکتی ہے۔ زبان سے ایک بات کا نکل جانا، ایک خلاف معمول لفظ کا استعمال یا ایک غیر واضح لفظ کا استعمال اور اسطرح کے لفظوں کا استعمال ایک دشمن پیدا کر سکتا ہے۔ جہاں ہماری توقع تھہی کہ ہم کوئی دوست بنا سکتے ہیں۔ ایک پڑھے لکھے شخص کےمختلف الفاظ کا استعمال اور عام بول چال ایک ان پڑھ شخص غرور جیسے معنی میں لےسکتا ہے۔ ٖغیر رضا مندی سے۔ اگر ہم ایک لفظ کا استعمال کرتے ہیں جو ہمارے سننے والے کو مختلف معنی دے سکتا ہے بہ نسبت جو ہم اپنے جیسے گروہ کے لوگوں کے ساتھ کر سکتے ہیں۔ اسطرح بول چال بغیر سوچے سمجھے ہلکے پھلکے انداز میں بولنے کا نام نہیں بلکہ ایک ایسی چیز ہے جو بہت احتیاط کا تقا ضا کرتی ہے۔
1. What is the good or evil of speech?
Answer: Speech is a gift but it can turn a man into an enemy if he does not use it carefully.
2. What mischief can wrong word do?
Answer: The use of a wrong word can cause misunderstanding and turn a man into an enemy.
3. What is the advice the writer gives for looking after over speech?
Answer: The writer advises that speech needs careful handling. No one should speak carelessly.
4. Suggest a suitable title for the passage and make a précis of the passage.
Title: Speech-A Great Blessing
Précis: Speech is a blessing but it may prove itself a curse. It makes others aware of our objects. But it is a curse if we use some wrong or ambiguous word. It can turn a man into an enemy. That’s why, it demands a careful handling on the part of the speaker.

Sir,
I want to draw your attention to an important problem of sensational news being published in the newspaper. No doubt, media has attained untold importance in our society. Even a lay man can get any type of information through newspapers. But one thing is very alarming in this regard. These newspapers publish sensational news in the newspapers. These items of news create sensation in the public. The people feel panic after reading these sensational items of news. Sometimes, the pictures of bomb blasts, murders and the scenes of different parts of bodies scattering here and there create feelings of horror and sensation in the children. Not only the children but the elders also feel disturbed and anxious to see them. In this regard, the concerned authorities are requested to avoid publishing sensational news. The government can also impose restriction on these media channels to avoid such things.
I am sure that the concerned authorities and the government will look into this matter seriously.

ترجمہ: جو لوگ کام نہیں کرتے ہر وقت قسمت کو کوستے رہتے ہیں۔ انکا خیال ہے کہ بغیر ہاتھ ہلائے انکو خزانہ ہاتھ آ جائے گا۔ کچھ لوگ ایسے ہیں جوکام تو کرتے ہیں لیکن انکی سوچ منفی ہوتی ہے۔ وہ اپنے لئے بھی اور دوسروں کے لئے بھی مصیبت کا باعث بنتے ہیں۔ ہاں کچھ لوگ ایسے بھی ہوتے ہیں جو صرف تعمیری کام میں یقین رکھتے ہیں۔ ان پر قوموں کا انحصار ہوتا ہے۔
Translation: The people who do not work always curse their fate. They think that they will get some treasure without doing any kind of labour. There are few people who do work but their thinking is negative. They become troublesome for themselves as well as for others. But there are a few people who believe in constructive work only. The nations depend on such people.
