The Role of Vitamins

Q: What are vitamins? What is their role in our health? OR What are the harms of deficiency of vitamins in human body? OR What are fat soluble vitamins? OR What are water soluble vitamins?

Answer: According to Kenneth Walker: “Vitamins are certain chemical elements necessary for health and growth of human body. The chemical nature of the vitamins is not known. Vitamins play an important role in the development of our health.

There are two kinds of vitamins. They are fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D and E. All these vitamins are found in different things i.e. cod liver, oil, butter, green vegetables, etc. The absence of vitamin ‘A’ affects the growth of body. The absence of vitamin ‘D’ causes rickets. The deficiency of vitamin ‘E’ affects the reproductive system.

Water soluble vitamins include vitamin ‘B’ and ‘C.’ The deficiency of vitamin ‘B’ causes ‘Beriberi’. Vitamin ‘C’ is found in fresh vegetables. Its deficiency causes scurvy.

In the end, the writer suggests us not to make any effort to get vitamins in the form of tablets. We should try to get these vitamins through fresh vegetables and fruit. Balanced diet can surely of great value in this regard.                                  (Words: 171)
